Wordpress Plugin to append Unique Permalink IDs for Google News

Free Plugins & Resources

This plugin will generate permalinks formatted for Google News, just like myblog.org/this-is-a-very-interesting-post-12345 or myblog.org/this-is-a-very-interesting-post-for-real-45678. In fact a 5 digit unique ID will be added to the end of every generated permalink to meet the Google News requirements.

Already existing posts remain untouched as Google has probably already indexed those posts.

Plugin Information

  • Requires Wordpress 3.0 or later
  • Wordpress Settings > Permalinks has to be set to "Custom Structure" /%postname% (don't forget the leading slash)

  • Adds a unique 5 digit ID to all permalinks on your blog posts meeting the requirements of Google News.
  • On editing a post which has already been assigned a permanent ID, the URL may change if you are changing the title, but the unique ID always remains the same.
  • Older posts which have been created before installing this plugin will not be affected at all, neither on install nor on edit.
  • You are still free to add your own unique ID to the permalink, the plugin won't override it but be careful not to use an already exiting ID.
  • Unique IDs are only added to permalinks on post publish, not on any kind of draft.

  • If you add a post with the title "This is a very Interesting Post", the permalink will look like myblog.org/this-is-a-very-interesting-post-12345 where 12345 is a randomly generated unique ID.
  • If you change the title of a post from "This is a very Interesting Post" to "This is a very Interesting Post for real" and the post was created after installing this plugin, the new permalink will change to myblog.org/this-is-a-very-interesting-post-for-sure-12345 where the unique ID 12345 remains the same.
  • If you change the title of a post from "This is a very Interesting Post" to "This is a very Interesting Post for sure" and the post was created before installing this plugin, the permalink will not change.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Q: Why are my previous posts not given a unique ID after editing?
A: You should only index fresh posts in Google News. Old posts are already indexed in Google and should not be changed.
  • Q: Why are the permalinks changed when I edit a post which was added after installing the plugin?
A: When using a unique ID for Google News, we can change the URL as long as we keep the unique ID. This makes the URL more similar to the title.
  • Q: Why I don't see the Permalink in the Slug text field after I typed a title?
A: We simply don't want to cause any confusion. Also we want to make sure that everything is running automatically and smooth.
  • Q: Why can't I simply use the Post-ID as a unique ID?
A: We think it's more consistent if you are using 5 digit IDs only.
